Continued from the last post on this series
Ephesians 6:14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.
The Belt of Truth
The belt of a Roman soldier (the balteus) was a crucial part of the soldiers armour.
Only soldiers were allowed to wear the balteus and they could wear it at all times as they so desired.
This made soldiers easily distinguishable from civilian citizens.
Furthermore, the balteus with the aid of the scabbard was used to hold the soldier's sword. This means the standard way to carry the sword about was with the aid of the belt (the balteus).
Lastly, the belt was what held the body armour (breastplate) and the tunic worn underneath in place and firm. This is why the Apostle Paul mentioned the body armour immediately after the belt.
How does this translate into the function of the belt of truth as a weapon that enables us battle the enemy in our bid to guard our progress? Well it's a bit obvious but I'll explain.
A child of God; a believer in Christ is known as one who speaks the truth. The determinant regarding our spiritual paternity is the veracity of the words we speak. Jesus spoke to the Pharisees and said: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44)
Truth is more than just a moral virtue, it is the foundation for our original and continual existence. Deviation from the truth leads to abnormality and a corruption of that which was originally intended.
Hence there is a great need for believers to hold on to the veracity of truth in these days when lies, half-truths and hypocrisy are the order of the day.
Truth sets one free from the crowd that is trapped in the lies of the enemy. Jesus said in John 8:32 "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
Civilians get killed in the crossfire and a soldier on the battle field. Truth ensures that you don't get wasted and overcome before you have a chance to defend yourself.
Truth makes the enemy know who you truly are like the balteus make everyone know who the soldiers were. Thereby giving you the unfair advantage of victory since your victory in Christ is already guaranteed.
Let's continue tomorrow by God's Grace.
