*Theme:* The Law is a pattern (part 2)
As I said yesterday, the law was a pattern for something better.
For every stage of man's level of the revelation of God, there's always that system laid by God that echoes GOD's eternal purpose for His people through time.
What then is this purpose that the law served?
Let's check out what God said in Leviticus which we read yesterday: Leviticus 11:45&47
[45]For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: *ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.*
[47]*To make a difference between the unclean and the clean,...*
God's eternal purpose for His own is that they be Holy. The Hebrew word for holy is “qodesh” and means “apartness, set-apartness, separateness, sacredness” In the New Testament, the word for holy is “hagios” and means set apart, reverend, sacred, and worthy of veneration."
So we see that God's eternal purpose was for His people to be separate and set apart from other nations around them. Hence they needed to have laws which would truly cause them to stand apart from other nations.
Most of the laws given were contrary to the norm and practices of the Nations around Israel. So God was saying via the law to the children of Israel, that He wants them separate from others but since they couldn't do it on their own due to their limited revelation of God, the laws would serve as a pattern/guide that will cause them to be separate from others.
Moses had a revelation of God unlike any other man before him did. Now one of the laws Moses gave the Israelites was that they couldn't marry from other nations. Moses broke this law but wasn't held accountable by God for it. Why was this so? This was because that which God intended to achieve via that law was holiness (set apartness), and Moses already had that. No man was set apart unto God as Moses was.
So a higher revelation of God which brings a man closer and set apart to Go replaces the law when sepaaration is achieved. Enoch walked with God (holiness and separateness) and God suspended the law of death which He spoke of in Genesis that man must return to dust from whence he came from.
The ultimate goal of God is that His people become holy as He is. He gave laws to help His people achieve that. Until a higher revelation came which replaced those laws.
The full revelation of Jesus (God) to man brought about the imputting of the righteous and the Holy of God on the inside of man which brought about the abolishment of the laws.
Only the priests were allowed to eat shewbread but David did. He had a higher revleation of God that he was set apart. Jesus even referred to that incident but didn't condemn but laud it.
Don't do this, don't do that was the law's way to set man apart. When God told them not to eat all those things in Leviticus 11, God looked at other nations around them and wanted the Israelites separate even in their eating habits. When you understand the purpose of the laws you appreciate it.
Why did God say they shouldn't yoke the ox and the donkey? Why were they not to wear wool and cotton together? Why did they have to wash themselves after touching a dead carcass? All these was a way set them apart and teach them spiritual truths.
Gace which is the fulfilment of the law says you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own possession.
The more revelation of Jesus you have, the more set apart you tend to become. Isaiah saw the Holy of God and saw his own filthiness. When Jesus is revealed, Holiness becomes imputed.
The law instructs us on how to be Holy, Grace makes us Holy.
