Theme: Isaiah 43:18-21 interpreted in relation to  Salvation. (Pt 4)
Sub Theme: Rivers in the Desert

Anchor Text: Isaiah 43:18
43:18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
43:19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

Isaiah went on to state that God will make rivers in the desert. Was this just a figure of speech or was God ready to change the balance of things in nature?

True enough God gave the Israelites water while they roamed the desert on their way to the promised land but did He intend to make it a common occurence? The answer is yes!

Let's look at what Jesus said in Matthew 12:43
"When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none." What is of particular interest to us in this discussion is that phrase: "through dry places".

The Benson Commentary can help us shed some light on this:
through dry places — Barren, dreary, desolate; or places not yet watered with the gospel. The words contain a plain allusion to the common notion, that evil demons had their haunts in deserts and desolate places.

This dry places were deserts of the souls and hearts of men that had not been watered by the gospel. The unclean spirit didn't meet any dry place suitable enough for it to rest: Most likely because it was already occupied by another unclean spirit. Just like Matthew Henry succinctly puts it: "Every heart is the residence of unclean spirits, except those which are temples of the Holy Ghost, by faith in Christ."

Therefore when Isaiah was speaking, the ultimate fulfilment of the prophecy of rivers in the desert was that the hearts of men will be watered with the gospel of Christ. Just like another Prophet spoke about God flooding the earth with His Glory; Habbakuk said "For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea."- Habakkuk 2:14.

What the prophets prophesied about is what we're living in.

Let's continue tomorrow...
