Theme: Coping with Aging Identity (Subjective Aging) (Part 6)

Anchor Text: Psalms 90:12 New Living Translation
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

2nd Corinthians 1:4 says: He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. (New Living Translation).

Lecrae said these lines in his song 'I did it for you':
I opened up my life and shared my life
So that you can see we all need Christ
I did it for you
If you can understand my pain
Maybe you can see we all need change
I did it for you
Gave you my life, my pain, my hurt
Man I hope this work

I pointed the verse above and those lyrics because what we go through in life aren't just lessons for us as individuals but also encouragement to others. Therefore I'll once again like to share my personal story in relation to what we've been discussing.

Truth is I've been affected by the issue of subjective aging a great deal. However by God's Grace and Mercy I've not only coped but also overcome it. Like Apostle Paul said I do not count myself to have already attained or apprehended but I bless God for daily Grace that has been extravagantly sufficient. Like I said the purpose of this series is to bring about healing and I trust my story will also encourage others (It's not the worst story out there but it's the one I know which I can freely and accurately share)

I could begin from different points in my life but I'll begin with when I passed-out from secondary school at an early chronological age. (I wonder why we actually pass-out from secondary school here in Nigeria and then graduate from tertiary institutions? If you do please tell me: Because it always sound like fainting to me. :D) However I found it difficult to gain admission. From bad results, failing to appear for a core paper (I was at home studying for it while others were writing it: All thanks to the NUT strike then that caused incessant time table change) and other factors.

Anyway bottom line is I stayed home much longer than I expected albeit not completely idle. I took up a teaching job so you see my penchant for teaching actually started a while back. My fellow classmates were getting admission into tertiary institutions left, right and centre. Even some younger ones whom I even put through concerning certain subjects since I was higher in class than they were also got admissions and I was still at home. This was an Off-Time event which severly messed up my head a bit because I couldn't understand what was wrong given I was not dumb (nah I wasn't). In fact some years later when my immediate younger sister passed her WAEC and then aced her JAMB all in one sitting I was like "What! Just kill me!"

I was in this phase for about 6 Years before I stepped into another. So for me I experienced two major OFF-TIME EVENTS: failure to gain admission into a tertiary institution and my early entry into the national labour force. So you can tick off 'OFF-TIME EVENTS' as one of the factors I've had to deal with.

And in this case my story is actually similar to most youths out there. Most of us end up getting so downcast and frustrated that we give up on our dreams. I want to encourage you; you're not alone. There are many of us out there like you who've overcome and many who are refusing to give up and battling it out.

The fact that it didn't happen at the time expected doesn't mean it's the end. I'll share more light on this much later in this series.

Tomorrow I'll continue my story... Remember I'm going somewhere with this.

Stay Graced...
