Theme: Guarding your progress (part 3)
Anchor Text: Nehemiah 4:11-23
Nehemiah 4:11 Meanwhile, our enemies were saying, “Before they know what’s happening, we will swoop down on them and kill them and end their work.”
The first thing you must understand in order to effectively guard your progress is that you have an enemy that doesn't want your progress. And that major enemy of every child of God is Satan the devil.
Ignorance of this spiritual fact can be devastating. That's why the Apostle Paul encouraged the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 2:11 not to be ignorant of Satan's devices.
The word 'devices' also can be translated as 'thoughts'. Therefore the enemy Satan has thoughts concerning us. If Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God has good thoughts towards us then we can infer from that that Satan has evil thoughts towards us. If we become ignorant of this, Satan gets an advantage of us.
Ignorance is a terrible flaw in the realm of the spirit. Whatever good thing you are ignorant of you cannot take hold of. Likewise whatever evil you are ignorant of can also take advantage of you.
Hence Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 5:8 said "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" There must be a spiritual alertness, sensitivity and vigilance to watch in which manner satan might try to attack.
Spiritual watchlessness can lead to Spiritual and physical deadness.
Our enemy also uses agents to fight against us. Ephesians 6:12 reveals who we war with. It says: 'For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places'.
The apostle Paul was careful to explain that our war is not against flesh and blood. Meaning it's not a physical or mortal battle. Therefore your enemy is not man. Now someone might ask what of humans who seek to halt our progress, aren't they enemies? After all the enemies of Nehemiah were human beings not spirit beings.
By God's Grace I'll address that tomorrow because it's important we are not ignorant of these things.
