Theme: Coping with Aging Identity (Subjective Aging) (Part 2)

Anchor Text: Psalms 90:12 New Living Translation
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

Age identity is a serious issue because how old a person feels reflects on his outlook concerning Life. It affects performance level and a person who feels older might have a rigid outlook to life.

Also what goes on internally tends to reflect outwardly. What I mean is when a person constantly feels older than he actually is, his mind begins to believe that he truly is older and his body begins to manifest such older traits. This is why you come across certain people and they look way older than they actually are.

When this change in age identity occurs, it is regarded as subjective aging. Subjective aging is a dynamic process that is influenced by a person's chronological (actual) age as well as their life conditions and experiences.

A change in age identity does not occur in isolation. It is actually subjective in nature. Which means there are factors responsible for it. These factors causes a person to age mentally than his actual chronological age.

We'll begin to discuss these factors one after the other and also show forth wisdom on how to cope with these factors. Like I said last time, the purpose of this series is to bring about healing.

The first factor or event that's responsible for subjective aging is "ROLE TRANSITION".

What is Role transition?
This is simply when an individual is required to play and function in a role he isn't actually supposed to perform.

In such cases more responsibilities is given to this individual and he finds himself trying to fit this new role that has been thrust on him.

Usually this occurs in a family where one loses a parent or parents. Older siblings are then required to make a transition into the role of a parent for the younger siblings. This always alter the age identity of such individual as he has to act maturedly in order to fit this new role.

Lets discuss more about it tomorrow...
