Marks of genuine spiritual leaders

1 Peter 5:2-4 (The Amplified Bible)
[2]Tend (nurture, guard, guide, and fold) the flock of God that is [your responsibility], not by coercion or constraint, but willingly; not dishonorably motivated by the advantages and profits [belonging to the office], but eagerly and cheerfully;
[3]Not domineering [as arrogant, dictatorial, and overbearing persons] over those in your charge, but being examples (patterns and models of Christian living) to the flock (the congregation).
[4]And [then] when the Chief Shepherd is revealed, you will win the conqueror's crown of glory.

With the way special focus and scrutiny are placed on the lives of spiritual leaders these days, it is important we look into the Holy Scriptures to see the marks of genuine spiritual leaders.

This action will allow spiritual leaders to once again assess themselves in light of the Word and make adjustments where necessary.

Furthermore, followers can ascertain if their spiritual leaders are truly genuine based on the standard of the Word.

The Apostle Peter who was chosen by the Lord Jesus Himself to be a shepherd and feed the flock wrote to instruct other spiritual leaders.

He highlighted the following as roles which a spiritual leader should perform:

1. Care for the people
Every leader is set to take care of, guide, and guard the people he leads.

He is to first serve the people of God. He is to put their needs first above his as a true shepherd would.

He is to make sacrifices for them for their general well-being.

2. Lead the people
In doing this, he shouldn't coerce or force them into treading the path he wants. Rather, he should allow them to follow willingly.

One of the principal truths of Christianity many fail to acknowledge is that "all things must be done out of a willing heart".

The early Christians gave and did all they did willfully.

As leaders, do not manipulate the people with sentimentalism or emotionalism to get them to do what needs to be done. Tell them the truth and allow them to do it willingly, joyfully, and cheerfully because that's where the blessing lies.

We'll continue tomorrow by God's Grace...

Have a graced day...
