Theme: Love's Template (part 3)
Anchor Text: 1 John 4:11B
Beloved if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
Sub Theme: God was Selfless
Anchor Text: John 15:13
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus who was God made flesh told his disciples that the greatest show of love was to lay down one's life. This is an act of selflessness. Selfless is defined as having, exhibiting or motivated by no concern for oneself but for others.
If you claim to love a person you must be willing to be selfless towards that person. You must practice continuously the act of giving up and giving away. Giving up your own comfort in order to bring about the other person's comfort. Giving away whatever you can as possessions in order to cater for that person.
Loving selflessly will make you deny yourself certain things to meet up the needs of the other person. If a lot of folks understand this we won't claim to love someone as easily as we do nowadays because of the grave implication.
Now most people might feel that this could get one sided but the truth is if both parties love in the same manner, that feeling will be absent. That's why Jesus said to His disciples in John 13:35 'By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.' In other words it's this selfless kind of love that distinguishes us as His disciples. It is it speaking in tongues, or going to church or even studying the word. It is by selfless love will the the world recognize true disciples of Jesus. Those who pray for their enemies which is contrary to human nature and belief.
Many spouse claim to love their partners but can't die for them. Scriptures said we should love one another as Christ loved us. Christ loved us to the point of dying for us. Is our love that fierce and committed? How selfless is your love? Are you willing to go the extra mile of discomfort just for the sake of love?
May God give us the Grace to love like Jesus did in Jesus name.
Stay Graced...
