Text: Proverbs 18:24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
In the 1994 Walts Disney's animated movie 'Aladin: The return of Jafar', the character Iago has an interesting line "Friend?! F-Friend is such a strong word. He's-he's more like an acquaintance!".
When I first heard those lines I found them to be full of wisdom. How you might ask? Well, not everyone is supposed to be your friend, most people are better of as acquaintances.
In truth, the word 'friend' is such a strong word that shouldn't be used to mean just anyone.
Yes, I know the word 'friend' as well as the meaning has been trivialized these days; after all, some of us already have 5,000 'friends' on Facebook. But are they really friends?
Friendship is a system God has put in place for man to thrive. Man wasn't designed to thrive in isolation but in association and cooperation.
Freinds are supposed to be brothers in the place where blood brothers aren't nearby or non-existent. Friends are a system of covering and support which God surrounds us with.
This was the case with David and Jonathan. Jonathan was ready to lay down his life for his friend David and David was ready to do same.
Friendship is a system of sacrifice. If your 'friend' isn't ready to sacrifice certain things for you then such a one isn't a friend.
Friends know each other as well as their secrets and are ready to protect their friends.
Jesus said to His disciples in John 15:13&15 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."
So let's ask ourselves, do the ones we call 'friend' deserve such description? If they don't, then they shouldn't be called such.
They shouldn't be your friends, that doesn't mean they become your enemies: They are simply acquaintances.
As much as we need friendship for us to thrive, we only need friends who are friendly in deed and not just in word or name.
Have a graced day...
